It doesn’t matter what the men think. Sooner or later the officers will get some idiot idea in their head.

Just remember: chain-of-command will always save your ass. At least for Americans, all citizens are the collective commander-in-chief. When generals get excited about a campaign because pulling out will redound badly upon their career, we can remember they can’t think outside the box and give them orders.

They LIKE orders. That way, they don’t have to think.
