Modern languages are coming up with the BEST terms and phrases. My personal favorite is “My bad.”
It seems to mean “It’s no use apologizing because whatever it was has happened and the damage has been done — but while I didn’t mean to do it, I admit responsibility. I probably can’t do anything about it now, and I know an apology would be pointless, but if we can move on and fix what we can — or if you’ll allow me to do so, I’m there.”
It doesn’t blow anybody off, but it puts the brakes on the screaming and recriminations and crawling, and allows everyone involved to be grown-ups. It’s so mature, and not in the parental-warning way.
