!#$!!! WordPress!
I had this blog written, and it’s gone again. WordPress once wiped a month’s worth of Stinz blogs. What is UP with this program??
Anyway…
Why German humor doesn’t translate – much of it really is just language -based. They do love their double meanings. All Quiet On The Western Front would be better translated as “In the West, nothing new” — with all that connotes. The whole book is funny, but it just doesn’t translate.
Movie-maker Billy (Wilhelm) Wilder said he saw it in manuscript, and told Remarque, “You gotta lighten this up! It’s too grim!” So Remarque did. But he did it in German, with their grimly hilarious humor. No, it does NOT translate.
Kinda liked the layout and use of blacks on this page. Still do.

Japanese is the same way. So many puns that just do not translate. Some translators make a damn good approximation, though.
The panel layout here is remarkable, and gutsy. Would that more artists (a) had that kind of idea and (b) could actually pull it off. Including myself!
Thank you! It needed height, so it happened.
Manawolf: Yeah, language is so damn fascinating. I took Russian and Japanese in college, and it’s really something to compare. Thanks for the comment on the panel layout — basically just a way of fitting in the bridge!
It breaks my heart that at 54 I will never know German well enough to read Goethe or Schiller.
I agree with you about both the layout and the blacks on this page. The layout gives a sense of height to the bridge and the blacks provide the shadowing that shows just how sturdy it is. Well done!
Thank you! Again, it asked to be done that way.
