Nobody’s very heroic after a war. Well, the women trying to survive, rebuild and keep the kids fed, yeah. But they were trying to do that during the war, too, with very little help.
Note how all the women in the background have no time to sit around being tired and sorry for themselves. These would be the Trümmerfrauen or “Rubble Women” who helped rebuild Germany. Somebody has to feed the kids.
Some of my readers, Americans or British, are the children or grandchildren of these women.
The Peach always acted like 1940′s women as portrayed in the movies. I’ve always wondered if, in this scene, he’s going over the top because it scares Udo, and Pfirsich is tired of not being himself. It’s so much fun acting like the Scarlet Pimpernel, and such a weapon, why would he abandon it? Besides, it’s so much fun. For him AND me.
Winzig’s all she’s got. If he and his are killed, all she’s got are the SS. Talk about the rock and the hard place.

I mean, THEY punch each other in the face before they’re friends — why shouldn’t WE?
Come to think of it, how many of us have good relationships with men that started with squabbling? Big-horn ewes have to butt heads with the rams before they ovulate, don’t they?
