Just takes a little happy about somebody he loved to peel the old DESERT Peach right out of the cynical war officer. It’s still there.
And a flashback-within-a-flashback.
I can get away with this because my readers can Keep Up. You usually do.

Everybody around this man wears their heart on their sleeve.
(No, “everybody” and “they” aren’t traditionally grammatical, but it’s …. less messy.)

Let’s not fall for Rosen’s – or the Americans’ – kindliness. Lice spread, so to protect one’s own people, one has to make sure nobody has them. Health for everybody, or health for nobody.

Rosen, of course, has absolutely no control over his little friend. Nor, really, would he want to have.

She must love Rosen. Why else would she pick up that smelly, louse-ridden little marmoset?
Rosen must have pheromones like Hitler.

I grew up in Washington State, in a rural area, and had friends in rural areas. It looks kinda like this.
How do you know you’ve crossed from Canada to an American State? Because suddenly the place is a godawful wreck. Scrub, clear-cuts, pitted and mud roads, old falling-down barbed-wire fences, unpainted and dirty buildings, rank sickly grass, ditched and filthy rivers and litter EVERYWHERE. And wild animals are just “garden pests,” when hunting them isn’t practice for war.
Gotta make sure all our money goes to that defense budget, because somebody might come try to steal the garbage-heap we’ve made of the place in a short few centuries.

This is a GOOOD businessman. Udo wants to stay!
I’m wondering if the “offering” there went off to get his boss to push the issue. This is one job he’s really going to like, if he can get it.

Yes, there’s a reason the Peach wears that pearl – and it’s not just because it’s pretty.
He, like everyone else then and there, couldn’t afford to turn away a love-talisman.
