As an assimilated family, Udo’s family of course would be terribly proud of having so many of their members doing their duty in the armed forces of their country.
A lot of Native Americans — specifically the peoples of the United States conquest — support their veterans and young men in the military as strongly as they support their basketball teams. In the early 20th century, the US government issued US flags to all the reservations. Since the Nations were using US flags as trophies anyway, this was a way of assimilating them and changing the meaning of those flags, from sign of triumph to badge of membership.
Hoop dancing and games, and warrior societies are traditionally part of Native American culture. They’re the ones had the War Chiefs. Hell, they had copyright; we — ahem — borrowed all sorts of things from them. Bathing, among them.
Now if we could only pick another of their traditions — the Peace Chief.
