You’re discovering Udo’s background at the same time I did.  His past developed organically out of the argument with his father.

Inter-service rivalries or turf battles apply to all ape groups, especially with the military of any time and place.  During World War Two, the American army called sailors “Anchor-clanker Pelican Raper.”  The army assumes everybody in the air force is gay.  It also accuses the Marines of being poor, stupid and overly bold, sniffing, “We always have to go in and clean up what they started.”  The Green Berets were called The Girl Scouts because of their hats.

This verbal abuse can also apply to one’s own unit, as a point of pride.  The 101st Airborne, because of their screaming eagle badge, during the Vietnam war called themselves The Choking Chickens.  The present-day unit calls itself The Puking Buzzards.  It’s an old unit — going back to the Civil War — and it gets to say it.

The wooden eagle at our house was named “Old Abe” by Dan after the 8th Wisconsin eagle. He was in the 101st during Vietnam.  The 8th is the parent unit of the 101st.

Don’t take any wooden eagles?
