If you think it’s scary in our country now — this literally could have gotten you shot in Germany in 1945.
And yet there were still Germans just this stubborn. Now whether that’s bravery or a character flaw, I’m not arguing.

The art got really ornate on this one. It was obviously made as an intentional black-and-white, with no need for color.
Not that there’d be anything more colorful on this page than the situation or the language.
The little hands were used originally in the Black Manuscript story Ringcat.

With Winzig, you gotta really think of a herd stallion. He may kick his people around, but he’s going to put himself between them and danger.
No matter what his myriad of faults, the man is BRAVE. Or doesn’t have a fear button. Or substitutes exasperation for courage.
BTW, watching Have Gun – Will Travel, realized the character is usually urbane and cool , even elegant — but when pushed, he turns highly exasperated, and even though he tries hard to hold off trouble, and warns the other guy constantly, when they ask for it that hard, they get it. Remind you of any characters you’ve seen in this series?

The thing about Winzig is, if he’s into something, he’s into it whole-heartedly. By now he’s too angry to ever be scared again. And he’s feeling betrayed up to HERE. He just does not give a good verdammt, now.

A German girl came up to my table at a Vancouver show, pointed out Miki on the cover of this book and said, “This Is My Mother.”
Not the name or the character — just what she had to go through. Which is one of the greatest reviews I ever got. And all I was doing was trying to imagine what it would have been like for me if I’d had to survive the end of a war.

Been trying to explain to people for years that the Germans, like everybody else, are not just one lump and have different ideas.
Actually, they have them even more. They may think they’re one cohesive group, but they can get loud when they aren’t.

Had a lot of fun drawing the filth and misery, here. Oh, the number of people who think war is fun…

The Peach doesn’t even show up in this story. You’ll have to wait for a later issue to see what he was doing at the same time.
