“Good, decent” soldier is the point.
The Chinese proverb goes, “Don’t use good iron to make a horseshoe nail, nor a good man to make a soldier.”

The problem with being an officer is you have to act like one.
Which may or may not be a good thing.

Go ahead, scream, but the guy can’t be fired — she’s going to have to deal with him as an officer.
The Peach is getting the situation he wants in place before the idiot officer can make it all wrong.
No, it’s not right — but this is an army. Nothing’s right in an army. Those idiots dam major watersheds and drain state-wide wetlands (d’oh!).

Yes, many men make what they perceive as squabbling workers work together afterwards.
I mean, THEY punch each other in the face before they’re friends — why shouldn’t WE?
Come to think of it, how many of us have good relationships with men that started with squabbling? Big-horn ewes have to butt heads with the rams before they ovulate, don’t they?

This argument is still going on today. We’ve many a Kapo amongst our own female population. Their Indian name is Sucks-Up-To-The-Boys.
“Kapo” is like Oreo or Apple or Banana. It means a person — in this case a woman — who tries to keep other people like herself imprisoned to stay on top herself. You’d no more blame her than you’d blame the original Kapos, for matters of survival.

The German army, after WWII, hunted down old native African pensioners from WWI — and paid them.
A lot of those old guys were illiterate and had no paperwork. So what did the Germans do? Argue there was no proof? Try to get out of it? (Settle down, Americans). They sent out an army sergeant who knew the World War One rifle drill. If the old African could do the drill, he got the pension.
Sooner or later, the Germans get around to clearing their debts. It may take a while, but they do it. They’re a very peculiar breed of human in that they seem to be able to learn. Oddly enough, when they became Americans they seemed to lose this ability. Something in our water?

I’m getting all these blog posts done because I’m reading my own book.
This is like those movie commentaries when the director and the actors go silent because they’re watching their own movie.
But if they don’t like it enough to act like fans, then it wouldn’t be as good, would it?
