The weird thing about Rosen is I never read Roy Crane’s Captain Easy series until I got the Fantagraphics collection for Christmas — and they’re like separated at birth. I guess it’s just the dark-haired Bad Boy archetype, but the mature version, not the kid. This one has body hair.

Look at Udo chewing away on that wad of tobacco. When tough guys go, they really go. The Roman empire stays home and makes spaghetti and really nice table wines.

A colleague just sent me the Fantagraphics Captain Easy reprint. Man, this character must be real, because we keep re-inventing him.
The pansy scene is real. It was originally a conversation between two gay friends, and in the middle of it, one of them drawled, “Oh, no. She’s going to use this, you know.”
Now Udo’s become proprietorial. That’s HIS officer, and he’s SPECIAL. He’s FAMILY.
(Writing this blog is getting easier. While I usually hate talking about how I did it because I just wrote it and it’s all sitting there, the comments from my smart and funny readers is allowing for a chat thread that’s almost like a mini-interview — with good questions!)
